Our Vision
Precision Carbon Technologies, LLC is a startup company that has developed a new proprietary polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer that is a precursor to high-performance carbon fibers (CFs). The new PAN composition simultaneously enhances the tensile modulus and strength of CFs, while not sacrificing extensibility (as demonstrated in early prototypes). Such materials would represent a new class of carbon fiber that could be highly disruptive in the automobile and aerospace industries, where lighter yet robust materials mean lower fuel requirements or longer battery lifetimes, while simultaneously maintaining safety and performance.
In addition to our own R&D programs, Precision Carbon Technologies, LLC can also assist your company with the design, synthesis, and characterization of custom polymers and advanced materials that are tailored to your specific needs and applications.
Technology & expertise
The company has developed a completely novel approach to synthesizing a structurally unique version of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), which is used to make carbon fiber. This new proprietary polymer allows for the production of higher tensile strength and higher tensile modulus fibers than those derived from commercially available PAN sources. The company is focused on scaling up the synthesis of the proprietary polymer and manufacturing carbon fiber that can be independently tested and applied in a range of industries.
Through this endeavor, the company also possesses the knowledge, infrastructure, and capabilities to design, synthesize, and characterize polymers in 1-20 kg batch sizes for any pilot studies that may be required to meet your business' goals.
Market
Carbon fiber is widely used in many sectors of the market, with aerospace comprising 30% (13,900 metric tons/yr) followed by wind turbines at 14% (6,700 metric tons/yr) and sports/leisure at 14% (6,400 metric tons/yr). Currently, carbon fiber sales are ~$5 billion/yr, but expected to reach $8.5 billion by 2030. This is just for the fiber. The market for carbon fiber composites and carbon-fiber reinforced plastics is much larger.
